Our Magnificent
Journey | Chapter 3 | Hawaii - Oahu | The Long Weekend |
| Slept well. Got up, showered, finished packing and grabbed breakfast at the now-familiar corner Denny's at a table overlooking the ocean. Watched hundreds of surfers in the early morning sun and fun. | | Back to the hotel to pick up our bags and say aloha to our incredible view. Retrieved the rental car from the valet service and drove sadly along H1 for the final time. Returned the car to Alamo and arrived at Honolulu International Airport with plenty of time to clear security, which was a breeze and took no time at all, although we were forced to check our overnight bags since HIA only allows one carry-one and we had our backpacks as well. | | So we sat for a while, depressed, inside the terminal and then decided to sit outside in one of the wonderfully Hawaiian outdoor waiting areas surrounded by plumeria trees swaying in the soft breezes of the trade winds, the song birds, and the sunlight. (The plumeria is the sweetest smelling flower on the planet, in my humble opinion.) Hawaii knows how to build airports. We are heading back into the intense heat of the Southwest desert, so these cool, fragrant breezes will be painfully missed. Off towards the leeward side of the island we could see the fires of burning pineapple fields, common during different parts of the growing season. | | | | The huge Japanese presence on Oahu, both kama'ina and tourist, is particularly evident at the airport. The hundreds of travelers we saw as we waited for our flight were predominantly Japanese. | | Made several calls to Dan while sitting in HIA waiting for our flight. Depressed, we watched a welcome-to-Hawaii tourist video on one of the terminal TV screens. | | Surprisingly, we bumped into our little friend Camille (from the Atlantis submarine) and her mother, Melanie, as we sat and waited. Melanie owns an interesting business involved in language translation/interpretation services. We enjoyed visiting with Melanie while Camille made friends with another youngster. | | Hawaiian Air Flight 2 to Los Angeles was an hour late taking off but we will make up most of the time in the air. We had tears in our eyes as we passed over Honolulu/Waikiki. Sadly we watched the skyscrapers, hotels, beaches and emerald green mountain gems fade beneath the clouds. We know without a doubt that we will return. Aloha and mahalo... | | | |
