Our Magnificent Journey
Chapter 9
Europe 2007
London, Tuscany, Paris

Friday
Day 3
London

I slept fairly well but Carol slept fitfully. The day starts out gray and cool, such a wonderful change from the furnace heat of the Tucson summer.

We enjoyed a delicious English breakfast of orange juice, yogurt, fried eggs, toast, coffee and granola at the hotel, much as we did here in 2001.

Then out into the cool brisk morning under gray skies. We walked around the corner back into the British Museum. Carol had purchased tickets for the "First Emperor: China 's Terra-Cotta Army." The exhibit was phenomenal, and we felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to view these life-sized, life-like figures, thousands of which were created to protect China 's first emperor in his afterlife. In 1974, a farmer digging a well unearthed one of these clay figures and the rest is literally history!

After leaving the British Museum, we took the Tube to the Borough Market, where we bought olives, cheeses, bread, and yogurt. Since it had been drizzling most of the day, we huddled under our umbrellas as we made our way back to the Tube and back to Bloomsbury, where we once again made use of the British Museum. We, along with others of like mind, enjoyed a nice picnic under the geometric dome. It was nice to be inside, warm and dry.

We went back to the hotel to rest and to semi-prepare for tomorrow's trip to Rome. Checked e-mail, then went back out into the drizzle. We walked to Soho and sat and had ginger ale, coffee and tiramisu, then strolled to Old Compton Street, were we sat and drank beer and wine and people-watched. Soho is lively at 6 p.m. on a Friday night. We spotted actor/writer/director Simon Callow, and later on we spied Natalie Dormer from "The Tudors."

We sat across the street from the Prince Edward Theatre as the night and the lights came on. As we watched, crowds began to gather and the people-watching was never better. It is one of our favorite pastimes when we travel. We enjoyed onion soup, chips, Guinness and each other's company.

At 8:00 p.m. we decided to walk northwest, back to the Morgan. We must be up early on Saturday to catch the flight to Rome. So back to the hotel through the rain we walked. We packed and fell into bed.
