Our Magnificent Journey
Chapter 12
2010
New England

Day 5
Boston - Kennebunkport

The Kendall Hotel is one of the nicest hotels we’ve stayed at in all of our travels. We highly recommend it. Terrific location, spacious room, large clean bathroom, comfy bed, delicious breakfast and interesting history.

Woke early, showered, dressed and enjoyed the last breakfast in the hotel restaurant, then checked out and caught a cab into Boston, where we picked up our Kia rental car at Enterprise. By 11:00 am we were headed north on 1A out of Boston. Passed through a few small towns before we came to Salem, where we spent some time exploring this historic town, heavily-laden with witch lore. Then onwards north through Ipswitch and dozens of small towns and villages. Fall is upon New England and the trees are beginning to turn into countless shakes of reds, oranges and yellows.

Arrived at Kennebunkport, Maine at 3:30 pm and found the charming lakeside Bufflehead Cove B&B. Our host Aaron helped us settle into our cute and comfortable room, and then we headed into town to explore.

Had a delicious dinner of clam chowder, crab roll, steamed clams and salad at Arundel Wharf situated along the bank of the Kennebunk River.

After dinner we walked through the small town of Kennebunkport, wandering in and out of shops. As the sun was setting, I snapped some photos of a colorful tree, whose reflection in the water caught our attention.

The shops were closing, so we bought some wine and cheese, drove along Ocean Ave. past large luxurious homes along the ocean including the one owned by George H.W. Bush, then back to the Bufflehead Cove B&B, and had a picnic on the large porch overlooking the serene Kennebunk River peppered with ducks and jumping fish. Earlier in the evening we spotted several wild turkeys ambling through the woods.

We spent some pleasant time visiting on the porch with our gracious and knowledgeable host Aaron, and enjoying the tranquility of the place as the aroma of a wood-burning fire wafted in the air, mixed with the sweet scent of night-blooming datura.

Left the screen door to our bungalow open and enjoyed the cool crisp clean night air. A gentle rain fell in the middle of the night and the fresh scents surrounding us were wonderful, and we slept well.
