We both slept very well and woke at 7 am.

Enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the Inn’s dining room, then packed the car for today’s exploration of New Hampshire’s White Mountains area.
Left the Inn and headed southwest to the scenic Kancamagus Highway (route 112) which winds in a loop around the White Mountains.

Today is spectacularly bright and sunny and cool. Nothing but blue skies above and psychedelic, fluorescent reds, oranges, yellows, browns and greens in the surrounding wooded hills that stretch as far as the eye can see. Capping it all off is Mt. Washington, supposedly the windiest point on the planet. Streams and rivers cascade crystal clear water, cutting channels through the forests.

At 2 pm we wound our way back into Jackson and had a surprisingly delicious dinner at the Red Fox on Rt. 16.

Then at 6pm we drove half an hour north to Gorham, where we met three other couples and jumped into a van driven by Dan of Dan’s Moose Tours. Dan, a native of Gorham, spent the next 3 hours driving us into the surrounding hills as he used various searchlights on his van to spot moose in the dark of night. We were fortunate to have seen three tonight – a large bull with a cow (female) and then later on another single cow. It was too dark to take photos but it was thrilling to observe these large, stately creatures in their environment.

At 9:30 pm we said thank you to Dan for an exciting evening, then drove back to the Inn at Ellis River in Jackson, searching for moose along the way.
Had some hot chocolate at the Inn to warm up (the temperature is now in the 30s) and by 11 pm we were sound asleep after a day full of beauty, exploration, adventure and excitement.
